...Well, I've gone up against big corporations before. (Okay, one of them.) I don't know how else to be prepared, and there's not much time to do it--but she needs a lawyer.

Very few clients are, in my experience.

...No. I don't. The weight of evidence is against him, but there's simply something about his manner that makes me think...But these are nebulous terms. I would that I had something more concrete than "gut feeling" to indicate innocence.

Well, you've got to trust that instinct. Sometimes it's all you have. Like my mentor said, it's pretty clear what a good lawyer does in such a situation...
